By Gerry Mulvaney, European Sales Manager, Landa Digital Printing
When I was a young salesman, in the days before mobile phones, the internet, social media and open neck collars, my old boss gave all of us in the sales team a tie pin. It was in the form of a gold bar with the letters YCDBSOYA in a prominent position across it. You can imagine it always caused a comment when customers saw it as they wanted to know the meaning of the acronym. It was in fact a reminder to us young sales people that “You Can’t Do Business Sitting on Your Axx”.
It was an important message for salesmen then. Although (like David Cameron) I have given up wearing ties apart from funerals – when I look at it now (I have still got it) – it is even more relevant in this always-on and connected Internet Age. However much we might be communicating by social media, email or SMS, in the end big important business is done by two people talking directly to each other.
I raise this subject because it is all too easy to get into the habit of communicating with your customers or potential customers using a mixture of the modern technologies. You think you are doing business but you are not. You are simply exchanging information, processing transactions or conveying details.
We are very well aware at Landa Digital Printing of the importance of YCDBSOYA and so we have spent the last few weeks out on the road in Europe and the USA, meeting with our B1 format customers in the countries where the first beta sites will be established. We have been talking business with them face to face, showing them the latest developments and samples, and mapping out timelines to installation.
We will be going on the road again in the autumn, but this time we will be meeting up with customers at the two big print shows and conferences in the USA and Europe – Print 13 and Labelexpo. Kristof Dekeukelaere, who looks after Landa Digital Printing Customers in the United States, will be attending Print 13 along with Benny Landa and other Landa executive team members. I on the other hand will be heading for the Belgian delights of beer, chocolate and Labelexpo with Sharon Rothschild, Packaging Product Segment Manager and other members of the team to catch up with our customers attending that show.
We have come a long way from those days when I used to carry a bag of coins in the car so I could find a public phone box to make calls to my customers and the office. But the importance of face to face contact remains as high as it has ever been.
So if you enjoy reading the Landanano blog, connecting with Landa Digital Printing on Facebook or LinkedIn, or following @landanano on Twitter or Google+, but now want to meet the real thing, let us know because we will be delighted to meet up with you to talk business.
