By Gerry Mulvaney, European Sales Manager, Landa Digital Printing
Of all the different departments that I saw on my recent visit to Rehovot, the one that we have jointly established with our digital front end (DFE) supplier EFI caught my attention. Here teams of software engineers from Landa Digital Printing and EFI are integrating and developing one of the fastest and most powerful DFEs in the market, ready for the beta testing of our B1 (41 in. /1,050 mm) format Landa S10 Nanographic Printing™ Press. Some of the brightest brains in the software business are working on this challenge. For me personally it was good to see our announcement of the partnership starting to bear fruit.

at Connect Conference 2014
I first worked with EFI in the early 1990s at my old company Litho Supplies. We had been looking at digital printing as another area for us to branch into, providing equipment, consumables and service for our customers. EFI supplied a number of digital engine manufacturers with digital front ends and when we became Xerox distributors they were on hand to provide the DFE to our customers.
They knew that the customer had the choice of several DFE suppliers, so always went the extra mile to ensure they were the supplier chosen by our customers. It became a very successful three way partnership. We worked closely with EFI as the supplier of the digital front end for the Xerox products. My customers around the UK and Europe quickly learned to appreciate the expertise in colour management that EFI brought to the party.
I have also had the pleasure of visiting their HQ in Silicon Valley and attending their hugely successful Connect Conference held in Las Vegas every year for their users from around the world. So, as well as their customer facing skills, I have seen “under the hood”.
Joining Forces to Create Good Value for Digital Print Production
One of the important lessons I have learned from EFI over the years – and I am sure we will see the same again as we start to install the first B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) Landa S10 Nanographic Printing™ Presses – is that the digital front end is a very important part of the press.
The functionality, features and controls built into the EFI Fiery™ can provide huge opportunities to printers who take the time to learn and understand them. Many times printers were able to develop new applications which created more print volumes. And many times they were able to integrate other EFI applications such as MIS and workflow which improved productivity and efficiency for their businesses.
Landa and EFI will jointly push the envelope this time to bring a new experience to the market. The Landa DFE will have the ability to create versions and personalise work at offset printing speed and quality. Already some of the companies who will beta test our Landa S10 press are thinking of ways to offer these benefits to their customer base.
So I am very pleased to see that I will be working again with EFI when we ship the first Landa S10 Nanographic Printing™ Presses to our customers. The skills that I have seen EFI bring to my customers over the last twenty years will, I know continue to be valued by the new generation of Landa Digital Printing customers.
