Two Presses In: How Advantage ColorGraphics Is Winning Work That Didn't Exist Before
Tom Ling didn't buy a second Landa S11P because the first one looked good in the pressroom. He bought it because his sales team kept selling work that one press couldn't keep up with.
Advantage ColorGraphics, based in Anaheim, California, runs two Landa S11P Nanographic Printing® Presses. Both perfecting, both B1. For a commercial printer operating in a market where run lengths keep shrinking and versioning keeps multiplying, a second press is a capacity decision.
The challenge before Landa
Ling is direct about what was missing. "The main challenge we had was having a 'true' offset replacement or alternative to our sheetfed business," he says. Quantities were shrinking, more jobs required versioning, and the equipment available at the time couldn't deliver a full-size sheet with the coating options his customers expected. Not digitally, anyway.
"A piece of equipment like the Landa was missing in our industry," Ling says. Too short for offset to make economic sense, too demanding for the digital presses available.
Why the S11P
The deciding factors were practical: B1 sheet size, variable data capability, duplex printing, and speed. The S11P checked all of them. With perfecting capability, Advantage ColorGraphics could run double-sided work without flipping sheets, a significant efficiency gain for any shop running high volumes of versioned work.
The second press came down to demand and throughput. One press couldn't keep up. With the 11K Module pushing past 11,200 sheets per hour, the capacity case for a second machine was clear.
What changed
One thing Ling didn't fully anticipate was his clients' reaction. "We have been pleasantly surprised at the receptiveness with our clients to allow us to run projects on both the larger versions on the offset as well as the smaller quantities on the Landa," he says. Clients who migrated toward the shorter-run work also found themselves drawn to the quality. "We have had many clients gravitate towards the high quality 7 color prints," Ling adds.
More importantly, jobs started appearing that wouldn't have existed without the press.
One example: a self-mailer program running four-up, fully variable, different content and imaging on both sides, in large volumes, every month. Before the S11P, that job doesn't happen. The economics of variable B1 duplex printing at that volume simply didn't work on any equipment Advantage ColorGraphics had.
Another: a postcard program running sixteen-up with variable addresses and personalized maps, medium volume, highly targeted, on monthly and quarterly cycles. The kind of work where the value is in the data, not the ink coverage, and where the ability to print each piece differently is the entire point.
"We have several customers that run their projects on the Landa that would not be projects we would win if we did not have the capabilities of the Landa," Ling says.
What it means for the sales team
There's a detail in Ling's answers that's easy to miss but matters a lot to anyone running a commercial print operation. What stands out is what the press does for his sales team.
"The Landa has made a big difference to our organization as well as our sales team to have an option to win projects that we would normally have to decline or not be competitive in."
That's the shift. Work that would have been declined or priced out of contention becomes something a salesperson can actually quote.
Ling's advice to other printers considering the press reflects this: don't just look at your current book of work and how it would fit the Landa. Look at the work you could win, or be more competitive on, by having a larger, faster digital press in-house.
Through the transition
Advantage ColorGraphics has been running their Landa presses through a period of change at Landa Digital Printing itself, including the transition to new ownership under FIMI Opportunity Funds in late 2025. Ling's take on it is matter-of-fact: "We never experienced a delay or interruption with service, supplies, or parts from Landa. The previous Landa management as well as the new management showed that they cared about their install base and made us a priority while they transitioned."
For a printer with two presses and production commitments that depend on consistent supply and service, that continuity matters as much as anything else.
