By Louis Gordon, Marcom Manager, Landa Digital Printing
As Benny Landa explained in his recent webcast, our representatives have been on a global trek – covering North America, Asia, Europe and many points in between. We’ve met with many of printers, converters, industry analysts, and print purchasers.
The data and feedback we gathered have contributed to the further development of Nanographic Printing® presses, most notably the new Landa Operator Cockpit and the inline coating unit. This information has also given us additional understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing printing in general – and packaging in particular.
Global dynamics create opportunities for folding carton
We’ve done a deep dive into both commercial printing and the packaging industry. In packaging, especially, we’ve focused on the lion’s share of the market – the folding carton segment. To say the least, the more we learn about this business, the more enthusiastic we get!
For example, according to Smithers Pira, folding carton production is a recognized growth industry in the print world. In fact, it’s forecast to grow by 4.5% through 2016.
Why? Among many factors are global demographic shifts and the emergence of new economic power regions. The evolving market is triggering massive transitions in package buying behavior and preferences. Younger generations, in particular, purchase more foods and beverages for home consumption than their parents. The “new” buyer also wants packaging that’s resealable, microwaveable and environmentally friendly.
We’ve compiled much of our research and industry facts in a white paper, entitled “Accelerating the Growth of Packaging Production in the 21st Century: Market Shifts and New Technology Opening New Opportunities for Folding Carton Converters.”

Consider it a token of our appreciation for all those who have contributed to this industry, as well as for those who have generously provided their time and input to the Landa team.
Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press
Our first commercialized product, the B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press, is a sheetfed device with a throughput of 6,500 B1 sheets per hour.
Ideally suited for folding carton applications, it uses water-based Landa NanoInk® Colorants and prints on virtually any substrate. It succeeds in merging the core features and benefits of offset and digital print. It’s a “best of both worlds” scenario for packaging converters, as well as commercial printers down the line.
