While digital technologies are very well suited for extremely short runs up to 1,000 B2 sheets (29 in. / 750 mm), they fall short in terms of production specs and applications. The expense of hardware and hands-on operation leads to a prohibitively high total cost of ownership, or TCO.
Digital inkjet technologies have yet to fully mature – at least to a point where they meet folding carton standards for print quality and TCO. The new B2 format (29 in. / 750 mm) digital presses are still not up to par for folding carton applications.
Converters are fully primed for a new digital solution that offers offset quality and speed, but they’d rather wait for something that must address a variety of their visions and needs.
